Ahead of the tournament there are usually five or six main contenders in the running, but the tournament has a history of surprise winners coming from outside of the favourites.
Greece's victory in 2004 and Denmark in 1992 are the best examples of this, but even Italy at Euro 2020 and Portugal at Euro 2016 were far from big favourites before those tournaments began.

The race for the Golden Boot at the Euros is always hotly contested, with superstars and surprise packages winning alike over the years.
At Euro 2020, the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo edged out outsider Patrik Schick by virtue of having made an assist, as both forwards scored five goals each.
Previous golden boot winners have included household names like Antoine Griezmann, David Villa and Alan Shearer.
But the likes of Alan Dzagoev, Milan Baros and Tomas Brolin have also won the Golden Boot, which shows that it's often worth a bet on one of the less-favoured contenders.
In a competition as close as this, with so many contenders, the challenge to name the finalists is a stiff one. But it is a challenge many visitors to European Championship betting sites will relish.
With the draw made, it is possible to predict how the big guns might progress through the tournament.
At Euro 2020, England reached the final for the first time in their history, and may have been helped that six of their seven matches were held at their home stadium of Wembley.
In 2024, Germany will be the only country to enjoy home advantage so will fancy their chances of a first European Championship final since 2008.
But it may be best to wait until the final tournament draw to work out which two teams have the best route to the final before betting on this market.

Three-times winners of the tournament, the country that has produced legends such as Gerd Muller, Jurgen Klinsmann and Bastian Schweinsteiger will be hoping to secure a first European crown since 1996 after a disappointing round-of-16 exit at Euro 2020.
