Cádiz odds: +390

The tie odds: +280

The game:

Bottom-of-the-table Levante host 19th-placed Cádiz in a big relegation clash this weekend. The home side are rooted to the foot of LaLiga with just 11 points from 20 games. Cádiz occupies the second relegation spot and are just three points above Levante - meaning a win for the Granotas will see them leapfrog the away side on goal difference.

Levante won their first game of the season at home against Mallorca on January 8, scoring twice and managing to keep a clean sheet in the process. And they’ll be confident playing in front of their fans at the Estadi Ciutat de València again this weekend. Despite their position in the league, Levante’s home record this season is better than you might expect. In their 10 home games, they’ve only lost three times and managed to draw six and win one. The team’s strengths lie in its home form. They have kept four clean sheets, whereas away from their home stadium, they have not been able to manage a single shutout. Despite this, Levante has not been able to capitalize on their relatively strong defence and have failed to score in nine games.

Clean sheets a big issue for both teams

Over to Cádiz, who has similar defensive stats to Levante. They’ve both kept just four clean sheets all season. Cádiz has conceded 34 goals with an average of 1.7 goals put past them per game. Only Levante has a worse record with 41 goals conceded, however 63% of those goals were away from home.

Not much better at the other end

Onto the offensive side of things, and this is where the two teams have really struggled this season. Only Getafe has failed to score more times than Levante and Cádiz, who have scored in just 55% of their games this season. The home side has managed to score three goals in a single game twice this season which shows that on their day, they can seriously trouble sides. However, on both of those occasions, Levante lost 4-3. But both sides have been able to frustrate some of the best performing teams in the league, showing good mentality and spirit. Cádiz managed to hold Real Madrid to a goalless draw before the Christmas break, while Levante managed to score a 90th-minute equaliser against Atlético Madrid to draw 2-2 back in October. We should expect to see both teams going for this game as both realistically need all three points.

The managers

Levante’s manager Paco López will be hoping his side can climb up the table and relieve some of the pressure on him with a win. Cádiz go into this game with new coach Sergio Gonzalez after sacking Álvaro Cervera on January 11 - further putting in doubt the side’s ability to win this crucial game. Will he have enough time to implement a winning gameplan at Cádiz?

Player to watch: José Luis Morales

Levante has had 10 different goalscorers this season compared to Cádiz’s seven. This shows the home side has more outlets and attacking players who can find the back of the net. They will be counting on José Luis Morales - their top scorer - to be able to find the target and help his side to victory. He has scored six times this season including two in his last three games. The 34-year-old midfielder is a fan favorite and has been at the club since 2014. He sealed Levante’s massive win against Mallorca earlier this month with a last-minute goal and the veteran will be key if they are to win this game and ultimately stay in LaLiga. Morales also scored in the reverse fixture back in August which ended 1-1. In that game, Levante gave up a 1-0 win thanks to a 90th-minute Cádiz goal.

Summary:
An interesting statistic is the head-to-head record between these two. All three of their games in 2021 saw both teams scoring. The last time these teams met was on the opening gameweek where Cádiz stole a draw at the death. Since then, it has taken over four months for Levante to win a league game. However, after a morale boosting win, sportsbooks have them as favorites in this clash. Under new management, Cádiz’s players may have a point to prove.
