Barcelona has managed to turn its season around after the arrival of new manager and club legend Xavi. On recent form, they are the second-best team in LaLiga, having won three and drawn three of their last six games – with only Villarreal getting more points in that time. They have only lost once in their last 11 league matches and have been a force to be reckoned with. They’ve tightened up their defence and conceded just six goals in that time with solid performances from veterans Gerard Piqué and Jordi Alba.

Atlético Madrid fans have endured a rollercoaster of a season so far with high-scoring games, red cards, and late comebacks. In their last outing, Atléti hosted Valencia and found themselves two goals down at half time. But the home side found the net in the 64th minute before unbelievably scoring two goals in additional time to win 3-2. Atlético fans will be hoping for an easier game this time around, but it’s unlikely to come against this new look Barcelona.

Barcelona is currently sat in fifth place, just one point behind Atlético Madrid, who are on 36 points. A win at the Nou Camp for Barcelona would see them leapfrog Atleti and occupy the final Champions League spot. After being knocked out of the competition this season in the group stages for the first time since 2000/01, Barcelona will be desperate to return to Europe’s top table. They’re without top scorer Memphis Depay but will be boosted by the recent signings of club legend Dani Alves, Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester City forward Ferran Torres. Along with this, the Catalonian side has a decent record at the Nou Camp this season with six wins in 10 games. They’ve scored an average of 1.9 goals per game in front of their own fans.

Atlético has not fared well on the road this season. They’ve won just four out of 11 games and failed to keep a single clean sheet in any of those. With right-back Kieran Trippier having left for Newcastle, their defence has been left much weaker than it was. But up the other end of the field, they are still a major threat. They are the third highest-scoring side this season with 36 goals in 21 games and have only failed to score in three outings. Former Barcelona strikers Luis Suárez and Antoine Greizmann have been key players for Atleti this season, but the latter will miss this match through injury.

Player to watch

A player Barcelona needs to be wary of is Atlético Madrid’s Ángel Correa. He is in sensational form and is a candidate to win January’s LaLiga Player of the Month award. This season, the Argentinian has eight goals and four assists to his name. He bagged four goals in his last three league matches including a spectacular strike from the halfway line against Villarreal. In Griezmann’s absence, Correa has certainly stepped up to help the team get much-needed wins in their pursuit of a top-four finish. With Barcelona only keeping five clean sheets all season, Atlético Madrid will fancy their chances of scoring against an aging defense. Another player who Barcelona know all too well is Suárez. The Uruguayan has seven league goals this season and scored in the reverse fixture in October. We think he’s in with every chance of scoring again to sicken his former club.

Summary

Barcelona will be looking to finish the second half of this campaign on a high and even potentially challenge for the title. They have been very active in the January transfer market with marquee signings. The home side are priced as favorites, but Atlético Madrid has enough in its arsenal to hurt Barcelona with some familiar names. We should expect to see a very lively fixture.
