Columbus Crew won the MLS Cup for the second time as they beat Seattle Sounders 3-0 in their Mapfre Stadium. Lucas Zelarayán scored twice to clinch victory for the Crew, who had finished third in the Eastern Conference in the regular season.
2020 MLS Supporters
Philadelphia Union took the award for the best overall record in the regular season. With 47 points from 23 matches they were the only team to register an average of more than two points per game. They were knocked out of the playoffs, however, in the first round by New England Revolution.
Rossi finished top of the scoring charts thanks to the 14 goals he scored in just 19 games for Los Angeles FC. The Uruguayan followed in the footsteps of club captain Carlos Vela, who took the award in the previous season.
Pozuelo was named the winner of the 2020 Landon Donovan MVP Award after a string of outstanding displays for Toronto FC. The 29-year-old Spanish playmaker was at the heart of everything creative for his side; he finished the season with ten assists and nine goals.
2020 MLS Young
Player of the Year
Rossi became the first Uruguayan to win this prestigious award after topping the MLS goalscoring charts for the 2020 season. The 22-year-old striker impressed not only with the 14 goals he scored but also his all-round play in the Los Angeles FC forward line.
The MLS Cup is the most prestigious soccer prize in North America. It’s played for by the last two teams left in the MLS end-of-season playoffs and always attracts huge attention across the USA and Canada.
Because the MLS operates a draft system that helps to spread talent around the teams in the league, it’s not easy for one side to dominate – as so often happens in other countries. That means it’s always interesting to check out the MLS Cup odds during the season because the open nature of the league means more teams have a chance to lift the big prize.
Similarly, there is plenty of value to be found in MLS playoff odds as teams shift from league action to knock-out play.
Seattle Sounders have featured in four of the last five MLS Cup finals, winning two of them.
Bettors interested in MLS betting sites will find this one of the most open markets when the season gets under way in North America. The MLS draft system means that it can take some time before the season settles down and it becomes clear which teams are excelling and who the leading strikers are.
One factor to bear in mind when considering MLS betting on the top goalscorer is that the winner of the Golden Boot tends to be a player who has learned his trade elsewhere before coming to the MLS. The last home-grown winner was Chris Wondolowski of San Jose Earthquakes, who attained the second of his two Golden Boots in 2012.
That’s worth bearing in mind when you’re weighing up the MLS odds before the season starts, or when the early action is under way.
When you’re involved in MLS betting online, remember that the format of the season is quite different from most soccer leagues around the world.
The teams are split into two conferences, Eastern and Western, and the leading teams in each go through to a playoff knock-out tournament once the regular season is over.
The number of teams who make the playoffs has changed in recent years; it used to be the top six who went through. In 2019 it expanded to the top seven and in 2020 a bigger playoff process was staged after the regular season was truncated by the Covid-19 outbreak.
MLS betting sites offer MLS playoff odds on teams qualifying for the postseason. Look for teams with a good recent record of doing so, such as New York Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders.
While the playoffs are on, look at the MLS Cup odds to see who you think will end up as the top team in the league.
Major League Soccer has now been in existence for 25 years and is seen as a well established, mature competition.
One of its principal prizes for fans of MLS betting online to wager on is the Supporters’ Shield, which goes to the team with the best overall record in the regular season – sides such as LA Galaxy and DC United have a good historical record in the regular season.
If you’re thinking of getting involved in MLS betting by selecting the Supporters’ Shield winners to go on to win the MLS Cup, though, think again. In 17 seasons between 2003 and 2020, the Supporters’ Shield winners doubled up in the MLS Cup final only three times.
Aka match result odds, the moneyline is the most straightforward bet available if we are looking to wager on a soccer match – which team do we think is going to win? We decide and place our bet accordingly. Important to note in soccer, unlike many other sports, the moneyline can also include the third option of betting on the tie (draw).
In a handicap bet, the sportsbook gives one side a notional head start. If one team starts 1.5 goals ahead, that means the other has to win by two or more for a bet on them to pay out. Handicaps are usually expressed to half a goal to remove the possibility of a tie/draw.
In an over/under bet, the sportsbook predicts a total for a particular statistic in a match. It is most often total number of goals scored in a game, but it could be total number of corners, yellow cards, tackles, or assists. We decide whether we think the total will be more (over) or less (under) than the given number and bet accordingly.
If you have an opinion on the results of several matches rather than just one, you can combine those predicted outcomes in a parlay. If all the results go your way, the odds are multiplied and you could be looking at a significant payout. You can use our bet calculator to work out your potential parlay returns.
No hidden meaning, this bet is exactly as it sounds. If we want to predict the exact scoreline of a match, we are able to wager on that outcome on soccer betting websites. This is not an easy bet to get right, but that means if we do, our return should be substantial.
When we believe a player will score during a match, we can bet on that outcome. The betting odds for them being the scorer of the first goal of the game will be longer. If we think they will score at any time, our chances increase but the odds shorten.
Both Teams to Score
Both Teams to Score, also known as BTTS, is an extremely popular bet among fans of soccer betting. This is a simple yes or no wager – do we think both sides in a particular match will score a goal or not? It is a particular favorite of bettors who like to combine several games in a BTTS accumulator.
Draw No Bet
This bet removes the option of the tie (draw). We bet on one side to win and if they duly triumph, we will pick up a payout. If they lose, we lose, too. But if the result of the match is a draw we will get our stake back.
A Double Chance bet enables you to cover two out of the three outcomes of a soccer match. For instance, if we stake our money on “Home team and draw”, we will win the bet unless the away team wins the game.
To win with a Scorecast bet, we need to correctly predict both the first goalscorer and the final score of a match. The soccer odds for scorecasts will always look very attractive – but that’s because there are two outcomes, which makes this a difficult bet to win.
Shots on Target
We can bet on one player having more or fewer shots on target in a match than a number set by the sportsbook. Alternatively, we can bet on the total shots on target of one or both teams. Take care to check out the definition of a shot on target on the soccer betting sites you use – this can sometimes get complicated.
This bet allows us to wager on one player, one team or both teams having more or fewer shots at goal (whether the shot is on target or not) than a number set by the sportsbook.
If we believe a particular player is going to score more than one goal in a match, this is the market we want. We will be able to find soccer odds about that player scoring two, three or even more goals during the game.
This is similar to a goalscorer bet, in that we wager on a player to assist – i.e. directly set up – a goal any time in the match. Many soccer betting websites also allow us to bet on a player to assist more or fewer than a certain number of goals over a season.
Soccer fans love the buzz generated by rumors of possible player transfers between clubs. Many soccer betting apps now offer the chance to put money on the likelihood of Player X joining Club Y before the end of a particular date, usually the closure of a transfer window.
This is an over/under bet with a certain number of points awarded for each booking and sending-off. The sportsbook then sets the total it thinks will be racked up in a particular game. If we think plenty of yellow/red cards will be awarded, we would bet on the over, and vice versa if we think the game will have a lower number than the given total. Booking points for a yellow or red can differ between sportsbooks, so it's always smart to check before betting.
Tackling is a particular skill in football. Some players are very good at dispossessing the opposition and we can bet on them carrying out more or fewer tackles in a match than a total set by the sportsbook. We can also bet on a team’s total tackles. It’s always best to check the definition of a tackle on the soccer betting websites you use – this can differ between sportsbooks and stat sites.
There is a wide variety of bets that can be placed relating to corner kicks. These include betting over or under on the total number of corners in a match, or on one team being awarded more than their opponents, or there being more in the first half than the second.
A parlay is a bet on several different matches or outcomes. Usually, all the results have to be right for you to get a return.
Many Soccer betting sites offer parlay insurance. This means if one of your teams or players lets you down, you still get all or part of your stake back.
Cash Out allows you to close your bet and get some winnings before a match is over. If you have backed one side to win but fear their opponents will equalize, you may want to cash out.
However, the amount you get back will not be as much as your payout would be at full-time.
Money Back Insurance
With a money-back offer, you have the insurance that if your bet loses in a particular way, you will receive your stake back – usually in the form of a free bet. One example is when you back a team to win on the moneyline and the match is a draw. It’s worth shopping around for these offers.
Free Bet Clubs
The idea is a simple one; if you are a member of the club and you wager a certain amount with them during the week, you receive a free bet at the weekend. Soccer betting sites encourage loyalty with offers like this.
With bet builders you can create your own bet from any number of markets, which means if your bet doesn’t exist, you can get it priced up. For instance, if you think one team will win on the moneyline, a particular player will score and there will be a certain number of bookings or corners, a sportsbook will let you build that bet – then give you odds for it.
Sportsbooks will often offer an enhanced price on a particular outcome to offer their customers extra value, but also to attract extra bets. The new boosted price could be about the next player to score, the final result of a match, or any other event.
2 Goal Early Payout
Some sportsbooks will pay out on a bet as a win on the moneyline if the team in question goes two goals ahead. This means that if you have wagered on that team and they go two goals up, and their opponents come back to equalize or even win the match, you still win your bet.
